Sperry Chalet in Glacier Park

Sperry Chalet, is one of only two Chalets, in Glacier National
Park. This Chalet can only be reached by hiking or horseback riding.
The history of this spot goes back to 1913 in the days before cars were
used in the Park. A man by the name of James Hill and his son, Louis, were
connected to the Great Northern Railway, and had the Chalet built.
This Chalet offers a bit more of the modern conveniences than were originally offered.
There is still no electricity or running water though. Meals are informal, dinner is served from 6 to 7 p.m., breakfast served from 7 to 8:30 a.m. A trail lunch is provided Ala carte lunch service is available to all in the dining room from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Breakfast and dinner are available separately with advance notice.

Bedrooms are supplied with beds and bedding and towels. The restroom is an outside
building, you must bring your own toiletries, flashlight, good walking
shoes, insect repellant, and a water bottles. Be sure you are equipped with
warm clothing, in case of bad weather. Do not bring Candles. They are not
allowed.

The Sperry Chalet consists of two stone buildings. One is a two story
Hotel style building, while the other is the kitchen area with a delightful dining room.
For those who love to hike and not be burdened by carrying a heavy backpack,
this could be a very rewarding hike.

As for directions to Sperry Chalet, you will start at the McDonald
lodge
parking lot. Or you could get there by way of the Gunsight Trail. This
trail starts at the Jackson Glacier Viewpoint, off the "Going to the Sun
Road". You may also start from Sun Point on St. Mary's Lake.

To reach Sperry Lodge by the main trail at McDonald Lodge, it 's a 6.7 mile trip,
with a gain in elevation of 3,300 feet. When you reach your destination, you will
be amazed at the views of south central Glacier National Park.

Sperry Chalet sits high up on a rock ledge, where there is nothing to obstruct
the view of waterfalls and mountain peaks. Lake McDonald lies in the valley far below.
Now that you are here, plan on staying awhile if possible. There are many hiking
trails that start from the Chalet. You may want to go up to Sperry Glacier, this 3.5 mile hike to the headwall at Comeau Pass (el. 7970'), up the stone stairway and over to the Glacier is one of the most memorable and magnificent trips in the Park. Or there are also trails to Lincoln Peak and Lake Ellen Wilson. Gunsight Pass
may be a spot you would enjoy also. All with extraordinary views as far as the eye can see.

(Full American Plan only - includes dinner, breakfast and trail lunch or chalet lunch).
$160 US first person,
$110 US each additional person, same room.

Glacier National Park is located in the northwest corner of Montana, just north of Columbia Falls. The park encompasses more than one million acres and is home to grizzly bear, moose, elk, along with 63 varieties of wild mammals. While most of the roads in Glacier National Park are closed off during the winter, this provides miles and miles of tracks for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Visitors are seldom around in the dead of winter, so the muffled hush of the snow covered woods is especially enticing and serene.

A ski or snowshoe trip along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which is one of the most scenic roads in North America, is a great option, according to park rangers. The road is closed to cars from September or October until snowmelt, usually in June. Several short hiking trails branch off from the road, which would be excellent for snowshoeing or skiing in the winter season.

Once you have your gear, head up to Glacier National Park for an exciting adventure. Guided snowshoe trips are available, led by a park naturalist, and are highly recommended. If you are looking for an informative tour, snowshoeing is an easy way to explore the winter wonderland of this unique park. Snowshoeing will provide even the novice an effortless activity so your senses are more in tune with your environment and your guide's knowledge on the history, wildlife, geology, and biology of this precious ecosystem.
