Granite Park Chalet

in Glacier National Park

Granite Park Chalet Photo

In beautiful Glacier National Park, is open from
the first part of July until late in September.

Here is an overnight shelter for the really serious Hikers, but this is
a hike you will long remember, and never regret.
Most Hikers start this climb from Logan Pass. It's a 7.4 mile trip up the
Highland Trail. Or you may take the trail from Many Glacier up over Swiftcurrent Pass,
and may also reach the lodge from the loop on Going To The Sun road.
Upon reaching Granite Park Chalet, you will have hiked to an elevation
of 6,000 feet. The beautiful scenery along the way will assure you of a lot
of stops to rest and take pictures. Provide yourself with plenty of time and water,
you will not want to hurry.
This trip in Glacier National Park, will allow you to experience the
Park the way it was hiked before the " Going To The Sun Road " was built. It
was only reached by hiking or on horse back.
Granite Park Chalet was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1914,
for travelers and tourists to spend the night.  It was, and still is rustic.
There is a kitchen, for you to cook your own meals, a dining room in which to eat and
12 bedrooms with single bunk beds. You may either pack in your food,
sleeping bags, and water. Or by making arrangements ahead, you may
rent bedding and linens, and buy packaged meals that will be waiting for your
arrival.
We suggest that you give yourself plenty of time to relax on the front porch with a snack,
and take in the many spectacular views. You will enjoy sights that will completely
take you out of the problems of everyday life. From the deck of the chalet
you are able to enjoy views of Bear Valley and Heaven’s Peak!
Remember to dress accordingly though, you are up where there may be snow
until late spring and back again in early fall.

Early summer hiking will treat to views of lovely glacier lilies and many waterfalls.
With later hiking many more wildflowers make this a sight to behold.
With bear grass, paintbrush, asters, cinquefoil and Penstemon, to name just a few.

Enjoy and take lots of photos.

Glacier National Park is located in the northwest corner of Montana, just north of Columbia Falls. The park encompasses more than one million acres and is home to grizzly bear, moose, elk, along with 63 varieties of wild mammals. While most of the roads in Glacier National Park are closed off during the winter, this provides miles and miles of tracks for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Visitors are seldom around in the dead of winter, so the muffled hush of the snow covered woods is especially enticing and serene.

A ski or snowshoe trip along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which is one of the most scenic roads in North America, is a great option, according to park rangers. The road is closed to cars from September or October until snowmelt, usually in June. Several short hiking trails branch off from the road, which would be excellent for snowshoeing or skiing in the winter season.

Once you have your gear, head up to Glacier National Park for an exciting adventure. Guided snowshoe trips are available, led by a park naturalist, and are highly recommended. If you are looking for an informative tour, snowshoeing is an easy way to explore the winter wonderland of this unique park. Snowshoeing will provide even the novice an effortless activity so your senses are more in tune with your environment and your guide's knowledge on the history, wildlife, geology, and biology of this precious ecosystem.
