Red Fox In Glacier National Park

Two Young Red Fox

We have had the distinct pleasure of spotting and photographing a litter of three Red Fox kits.
Their den had been set up in a water culvert, and at times during the day the kits would venture out into the open to play.
As with most pups they love to tumble and romp around with each other.

The red fox we're talking about is a red-coated creature with a long, bushy tail (in fact, the tail is often nearly as long as the entire body). Red foxes are found throughout Montana, and can feel right at home in many different habitats; often, they're associated with crop lands. Since they dine on small mammals and rodents, they can make their home wherever they can find this food source. And since you can find rodents just about anywhere, you can find the red fox just about anywhere, as well.

Red Fox Family

The red fox doesn't rely on speed while hunting; rather, it uses its nose to find prey, then quickly pounces much like a house cat. During breeding season (in the late winter) foxes will sometimes hunt in pairs, but usually they hunt on their own. The babies, known as kits, are born in early spring; both mother and father participate in parenting. The parents will bring live prey to the den to help the kits to learn to hunt. By the end of the summer, the kits are ready to set off on their own. Spotting a red fox in Montana is never difficult if you look carefully--just keep a close watch for the bushy tail.

Glacier National Park is located in the northwest corner of Montana, just north of Columbia Falls. The park encompasses more than one million acres and is home to grizzly bear, moose, elk, along with 63 varieties of wild mammals. While most of the roads in Glacier National Park are closed off during the winter, this provides miles and miles of tracks for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Visitors are seldom around in the dead of winter, so the muffled hush of the snow covered woods is especially enticing and serene.

A ski or snowshoe trip along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which is one of the most scenic roads in North America, is a great option, according to park rangers. The road is closed to cars from September or October until snowmelt, usually in June. Several short hiking trails branch off from the road, which would be excellent for snowshoeing or skiing in the winter season.

Once you have your gear, head up to Glacier National Park for an exciting adventure. Guided snowshoe trips are available, led by a park naturalist, and are highly recommended. If you are looking for an informative tour, snowshoeing is an easy way to explore the winter wonderland of this unique park. Snowshoeing will provide even the novice an effortless activity so your senses are more in tune with your environment and your guide's knowledge on the history, wildlife, geology, and biology of this precious ecosystem.
